PORTSMOUTH— The Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association (SOPAA) and Shawnee State University present Landau Murphy and Friends performing at 7:30 p.m. on Thurs., Sept. 22 at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts (VRCFA) to kick off the 2016-17 season.

Laundau Eugene Murphy, Jr. and the legends of Motown, Leonard, Coleman and Blunt first captured the attention of the area’s audience two years ago with a memorable concert at the VRCFA and have returned to perform another energized concert.

Murphy wowed the audiences in 2011 when he won Logan, WV’s America’s Got Talent with his “Sinatra style” singing. Joining Murphy are Motown legends, Leonard, Coleman and Blunt. Glenn Leonard was the former lead vocalist for The Temptations, Joe Coleman is the lead singer with The Platters, and Joe Blunt was the former lead singer for The Drifters.

Backed by a great band, Murphy and the three legends of Motown will deliver a memorable performance all night long.

A dessert reception, sponsored by Farmers Insurance - the Donna Wolery Agency, will be held prior to the concert starting at 6:30 p.m. in the VRCFA lobby as a celebration of the beginning of the 2016-17 season.

Murphy’s concert will also marks the start of a pilot program to offer child care services to concert goers at SSU’s Children’s Learning Center (CLC). Information about the program or how to make reservations can be found on the VRCFA’s website, www.vrcfa.com.

Tickets for the concert are $15 for children under the age of 12, $30 for SSU students, staff and faculty, $40 for seniors and $45 for the general public. Upper tier prices are available at a discounted price. Special discounts for families and groups are also available.

Lead singers from Platters, Drifters and Temptations serve up a musical feast

The Temptations. The Platters. The Drifters.

There are enough hits by each of these soulful groups to fill up this page.

Now, take all three of them and bring them together—then we’re in a whole new musical dimension. That’s exactly what Glenn Leonard (of The Temptations fame), Joe Coleman (formerly of the The Platters) and Joe Blunt (of the Drifters) have done by joining forces.

And, guess what? The spectacle is coming to the ’Burg.

Leonard, Coleman & Blunt, commonly known as LCB, will hit the Cabaret Supper Club at Fredericksburg Square on Saturday evening. Due to high demand, the show has been moved from the venue’s upstairs cabaret room to its larger Washington Grand Ballroom.

“We’re ready to bring that old, classic, Motown-type of show to Fredericksburg,” said Coleman. “We’ll have all the hits, the choreography and the level of show you would see at the Apollo Theater or Howard Theatre.”

For a refresher, the collective hits the trio will cover include “My Girl,” “Only You,” “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,” “Just My Imagination” and “Under the Boardwalk.” They’ll be joined on stage by a five-piece band that, in Coleman’s words, are “fairly young cats compared to us,” but know how to bring it, too.

Aside from their respective fames in some of the most iconic vocal groups of all time, this isn’t LCB’s first rodeo together.

“We’ve been together for about six years as Leonard, Coleman and Blunt, but we’ve really known each other for a long time before that,” said Coleman. “In fact, [Blunt’s] mother and [Leonard’s] mother were directors of the junior choir at the same church in D.C., Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.”

Back in the day, Leonard and Blunt eventually joined up with Coleman to form a group called The True Reflection. The band had an LP together in 1973 with Atlantic Records.

Over the years, whether separate or together as one, they have quite the memories.

“One of my biggest moments was when I worked with one of the biggest artists in the world, Miss Barbara Streisand,” said Coleman. “That was at Madison Square Garden in New York City on her finale tour. That was a moment. I also remember when we took The Platters to China and sat with the governors from various provinces. There were people everywhere and it was like a symphony when we travelled around. Everything was choreographed and it was quite fascinating.”

These days, the guys are all about reflecting while mixing in a bit of new stuff.

“We still love performing and we’re still very close and dear friends,” said Coleman. “We’re actual going to release new music here soon and enjoy the ride. It’s not like the old days, when we were on the road for three to four months at a time.”

The backdrop for such a unique event couldn’t be more magnificent. The Cabaret Supper Club offers up some exquisite fare (dinner as well as show-only tickets are offered) in an intimately classy setting. Recent shows at the venue include Coniece Washington and the Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet.

“We started this last year and hope to bring this level of entertainment here two times a month,” said Deborah Perry, co-owner of Fredericksburg Square. “This Motown, soulful show is really history happening before our eyes … to bring them to our venue is a major achievement.”

And if The Supper Club keeps cooking up these kinds of shows, you can’t help but get excited about what may be on the menu down the line.

Leonard, Coleman & Blunt

Glenn Leonard, Joe Coleman and Joe Blunt have been around the world and back again several times each as the lead singers of three of the most legendary vocal groups of all time: the Temptations, Platters and Drifters. The three Washington, DC natives have a back-story right out of a Hollywood movie; Leonard, Coleman & Blunt grew up singing together in church and on street corners throughout the 1960s. The guys hit their first career peak with their early 1970s’s group “The” True Reflection, signed with the legendary Atlantic Records and recorded an outstanding debut album that received some regional airplay, dozens of tour dates and several national TV appearances including “Soul Train.” Eventually, the vocalists bid Washington, DC farewell and went their separate ways before recording a follow-up.

It was only then that each of their musical careers took off to the upper limits of stardom. Glenn Leonard and his sweet tenor voice joined Motown’s legendary Temptations, recording ten hit albums, touring the world, and singing lead on many of their 1970s and 1980s R&B hits. Glenn was also recently inducted into the R&B Hall of Fame. Joe Coleman joined the Platters for a two-decade stint as the group’s lead singer in addition to gaining a successful international solo career. Joe Blunt performed and recorded with the Drifters for over a decade in venues all over the world, earning a Lifetime Achievement Award from Sony Records.

Eventually, the three childhood pals found themselves back together in the Nation’s Capital where the old friends soon hit upon the idea of performing together as one unit, singing in unison all the biggest hits from each of their individual careers with The Temptations, Platters and Drifters. Collectively, Leonard, Coleman & Blunt’s groups have sold over 100 million records with dozens of number one hits everyone in the audience can sing along to. LCB concert attendees are now treated to incredible showmanship, classic dance moves and some of the biggest hits of all time, including “My Girl," “The Way You Do The Things You Do," “Get Ready,” “The Great Pretender,” “Only You,” “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,” “Under The Boardwalk,” “On Broadway,” “Save The Last Dance For Me,” and many, many more.

Together, LCB bring their rich blend of classic hits and a true friendship spanning over fifty years to the stage for delighted audiences lucky enough to catch a performance by the trio of seasoned vocal performers. It’s an evening of entertainment not to be missed.
